Impartial Assessments
Our audits are carried out independently, providing objective recommendations focused solely on improving road safety.
Stage 1 Road Safety Audits are mandatory upon the completion of the initial design phase. This assessment focuses on safety factors that could influence property acquisition, legal licenses, or easements, and must be completed before draft orders are officially published or planning permission is requested. For minor schemes, if an initial design phase is skipped, this evaluation can be merged with Stage 2 during the comprehensive design phase which would then be called a Combined Stage 1 and 2 Road Safety Audit.
Stage 2 Road Safety Audits are carried out once the final, detailed design work is finalised. At this point, the Audit team considers the specific technical elements of the highway project. Their review typically covers the precise configuration of the layout, the placement of signage, road markings, and street lighting, alongside critical details like drainage systems, footways, road surfacing, kerbs, structural specifics, and landscaping.
Stage 3 Road Safety Audits take place immediately after construction is finalised, ideally before the road is officially accessible to the public. Every new or highway improvement project should undergo this evaluation within 30 days of opening.
The Audit team analyses the infrastructure through the eyes of all potential road users, often navigating the site by driving, walking, or cycling. To ensure complete coverage, a Stage 3 Audit is conducted during both daytime and nighttime hours to spot potential hazards that only appear during the hours of darkness.
Stage 4 Road Safety Audits are undertaken following the opening of a completed highway scheme to monitor its safety performance in accordance with GG119. The Audit includes the review and analysis of personal injury collision data, together with site inspections, to identify any emerging road safety issues.
Under GG119, Stage 4 monitoring is typically carried out 12 months and 36 months after the scheme has opened to traffic, allowing sufficient collision data to be collected and assessed. The findings are used to determine whether any additional measures or remedial works are required to further improve road safety for all users.
