David A Graham Associates (DAGA), working in collaboration with CA Traffic Solutions LLP, was commissioned by WSP UK Limited to undertake an independent Stage 3 Road Safety Audit of the completed phases of the award-winning Poundbury urban extension in Dorset. The audit assessed the operational safety of the development before and shortly after opening to traffic, ensuring the innovative design continued to provide a safe environment for all road users.

Poundbury is a unique mixed-use development designed to prioritise pedestrians while reducing vehicle dominance. The challenge was to ensure that the completed highway infrastructure operated safely without compromising the development's distinctive architectural character.
During the audit, several potential safety issues were identified, including:
Loose gravel creating slip and trip hazards for pedestrians and cyclists.
Steep traffic calming features affecting vehicle stability.

Following the site visit, a detailed independent Road Safety Audit Report was prepared with practical recommendations designed to improve safety whilst maintaining the design principles of the Poundbury development.
