Home Zones

Home Zones: What are they?

Home Zones are residential streets in which the road space is shared between drivers and other road users with the wider needs of residents (including people who walk and cycle, and children) in mind. The aim is to change the way that streets are used and to improve the quality of life in residential streets by making them places for people, not just for traffic. They can be retrofitted into an existing street or become part of a new build housing development.

Why are DAGA the Home Zone specialists?

David Graham has extensive experience in this field having managed the Home Zone delivery program for Bristol City Council from 2002 – 2005 where six retrofit and new build schemes have been designated. He also sat on the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) national Home Zone Steering Group that is working on the next generation of Home Zone Guidelines. In addition to which, David regularly conducts practical “In house” Home Zone courses for consultants, local authorities and universities.

Retrofit Home Zones

In previous years a number of retrofit Home Zones have been delivered across England and Wales as part of the Department for Transport Home Zone Challenge Programme which came to an end in 2005.

New Build Home Zones

Currently, there is particular interest in new build Home Zones as many national house builders are quickly becoming aware of the advantages Home Zones can provide from allowing a more dense build pattern to gaining national prestige for their development. Home Zones will play a major part in meeting Government targets to address the current housing shortfall too.

To be ahead of the game you will need to know what makes a good Home Zone and what the local planning authority are looking for. David A Graham Associates has the expertise to guide you through this process. For a discussion on how we can help you meet this challenge please do not hesitate to contact us.
